Oxford’s own record puts teaching there in 1096. Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325. The triple alliance that historians call the Aztec Empire dates to 1428. On those numbers the lecture was older than the empire.

The peoples of central Mexico were not young as peoples. Cities and maize there are far older than Oxford. The comparison is about that empire, not about a continent.

Caveats

  • ‘Oxford’ here means the documented start of teaching, not a charter dated 1096 with a foundation stone.
