The future is the higher-entropy direction
The thermodynamic arrow of time — why we remember the past and not the future — is the universe’s low-entropy beginning plus the second law.
Microscopic physics is almost time-symmetric. Drop a glass, and the shards do not leap back into a goblet. Boltzmann saw that the difference is statistical: there are more ways to be broken than whole. A system wanders toward the larger set.
That only explains why entropy rises from a low value. It does not explain why the value was low. The remaining fact is cosmological: the early universe was extraordinarily smooth, a low-entropy state. We live on the slope down from that initial condition.
Memory, cause, and agency ride that slope. A record exists because a past was more ordered and left traces. This is not mysticism. It is the second law pointed at history.
Caveats
- Why the initial state was low-entropy is not settled. Inflation, proposals about the wave function of the universe, and other ideas compete.
- The psychological arrow (memory) and the thermodynamic arrow coincide in our experience; that is explained, not independently postulated.
