Farming began after the ice

The first durable agricultural economies appear in the Fertile Crescent about 11,500 years ago, after the last glacial period.

Foragers had managed landscapes for millennia. Sedentary cereal farming — wheat, barley, legumes, goats, sheep — concentrates in the hills of the Levant and the Zagros as the Younger Dryas ends. Göbekli Tepe and Jericho sit in that dawn.

Agriculture was invented more than once: China, New Guinea, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the African Sahel. The Fertile Crescent is the earliest well-dated package, not the only one. Each package is a local answer to climate, plants, and people.

The costs were immediate: narrower diets, shorter stature in some samples, epidemic disease, and hierarchy. The payoff was density, surplus, and the possibility of cities. Every later civilization is a footnote to that bargain.

Caveats

  • ‘Invention’ was a long process, not a single morning.
  • Dates and places continue to move earlier as archaeobotany improves.
